How Do Mirror Televisions Work?

We all love to sit down now and then for a bit of sporting action, a quality film or even a gripping soap opera. It is this love of the telly which has led manufacturers to come up with ever more innovative technology to let us enjoy watching it as much as possible.

As well as big screens, high definition images, bigger screens, surround sound and truly humungous screens we also now have the intriguing prospect of mirror televisions to look at too.  If the combination of a television and a classy mirror sounds like something out of a sci-fi film then you will be surprised to see that you can get hold of them right now.

For those people who like to know how their gadgets work here is a rundown on what makes a mirror television tick.

The History

I hated history at school but when it comes to fun household gadgets it is a lot more interesting, isn’t it? Anyway, there has been talk of this sort of mirror / TV combination since at least the 80s, so it is hardly a flash in the pan .The technology which makes it possible has only really become available at a reasonable cost in the last few years though, which is why you probably never heard of them before then.

Dielectric Glass

The glass which is used in these mirrors is called dielectric glass. This differs from conventional mirror glass in that it doesn’t have a reflective surface just stuck onto the back of it. If you manage to get hold of a piece of it anytime then it will just look like normal glass to you. It is a type of mirrored surface which is specially made by adding on layers of the special reflective material until the perfect combination is reached. At this point it will get to the right level of reflection to act as a mirror but also allows the images from the television screen to be seen perfectly.

Give It a Try at Home

If you get a chance to try out one of these amazing bathroom mirrors you will see that it works best when you are at a reasonable distance from it. Get too close it and it won’t give you the perfect effect. The lighting in the room also makes a difference to the quality of the image you see. Most people who go ahead and buy one of these fun TV frames find that it doesn’t take them long to get the right distance and the right lighting levels in their room. After this it is a question of enjoying it and enjoying when your visitors ask you how on Earth it works too.
